Can one make Carmen into a reflection of the Me Too movement? Well, we're certainly trying. It has it's challenges mind you. Much of Carmen's music is aggressive and assertive while much of Don José's is sensitive and highly emotive which makes it difficult to paint him as a sole aggressor in this context. But we're certainly giving it a go. The premiere looms on Saturday at Malmö Opera and tours until December with Emma Sventelius and myself in the lead roles.
